Born and raised in Texas, Janis moved to California in 1973 when her husband, Tom Carney, took a career position with Hewlett Packard. She and Tom have been married since 1971, and they have raised two children. Spending time with the family at their vacation home in Tahoe is her favorite occupation, with day-long hikes being a close second. Janis is also an avid reader who loves a good movie.

The aspect of being an attorney Janis enjoys most is giving people a clear understanding of the laws and principles governing their particular situation and then encouraging them to make informed decisions based upon both legality and practicality. Pragmatism is a key ingredient of her approach, and Janis is dedicated to helping clients identify specific goals, discover what it will take to achieve those goals, and then determine what they are realistically willing to commit to the effort. Once that determination has been made, Janis finds great satisfaction in providing support and advocacy to meet client needs.
